The clanging of pots and pans rang out from the kitchen, echoing as Brewster approached. Running into Rosalie in the kitchen had become a ritual now and it was one of the reasons he had been trying to find a way to stay in the guest room and rather than go back to the sleeping quarters.
Truth was, it wasn’t one of the reasons. It was the only reason. Since the evening when Rosalie had started talking to him, Brewster had enjoyed the daily conversations with her. She was a beautiful woman and he knew he could just look at her forever and be happy.
After he was first injured, he would look forward to meal times when she would bring his supper. As they slowly started warming up to each other, he enjoyed their time together more than he enjoyed the food. Soon the time with her left him only wanting more. That’s when he started keeping her company in the kitchen. Xenia had met him more than once in the kitchen and had only smiled knowingly.
And when they had asked him to go back to his room with the others, Brewster had claimed he didn’t think he was quite ready.
“Do you feel any pain?” Xenia had asked him. Her hand was on the knee, kneading it gently. It wasn’t so swollen anymore and the bruising was almost gone.
“No,” Brewster admitted even though he was tempted to lie about the pain if it meant staying closer to Rosalie.
“So why do you feel you shouldn’t return?”
“I can’t walk without my stick yet,” Brewster answered. “I’d feel much more comfortable if my leg was fully healed before I go back to the bunks.”
“You’d have to try it first, Brewster. You haven’t even tried.”
“Even if I try, I can’t walk without limping.”
“The limp will go away. Give it time.”
“My bed is on an upper bunk, isn’t that somewhat dangerous for someone in my state?” Brewster asked. Just then Rosalie came into the room. She was wearing a dark green dress with a dirtied white apron around her waist. Her face was flushed from the heat in the kitchen. Brewster thought she was simply lovely.
Rosalie gave Xenia the jar of foul smelling liniment and Xenia crept closer to Brewster to apply it to his knee. Rosalie didn’t leave, instead she watched with unhidden interest as Xenia applied it. She smiled at Brewster and for a moment, Xenia’s application wasn’t as painful.
“No, Brewster, you are an adult. You know how to get up and get down,” Xenia replied him, after applying the medicine.
“I’m telling you, Xenia. I’m not fit enough to return,” he said.
Xenia was smiling but her eyes were stern. The same eyes she gave him when he got his spelling wrong.
“You have till Friday, then you must return back to your room, Brewster.”
With that, she left the room, walking out briskly. Brewster pulled his trouser leg down over his knee. Then he raised his head to look at Rosalie.
“Why don’t you want to go back?” Rosalie asked.
